Libby Mitchell was born in Philadelphia in 1928 and has been creating art for over fifty years. She has a studio in Blue Hill, Maine, a small town in the Northeast of the state, where she lives and works. She is influenced by the New York expressionists and inspired by the European Renaissance painters.

She uses acrylics in her most recent work as it allows her to paint in complex layers with vibrant colours. She says about working with acrylics "Years ago I didn't use them because the colours didn't have any life, they were dull. Now they're wonderful and fun to work with. They dry quickly. I work in layers and with oils I had to wait weeks, sometimes months. With acrylics it's right now."

She is also inspired by Renoir and like Renoir she says "For Renoir, like me, it is all painting. What's your religion? Painting. What do you eat? Painting. Whatever they asked him that was the extent of the conversation--painting." She says "Painting keeps me going. I will continue to work. Until I can't, I'll be painting."
