Julie Freund

Julie Freund is a painter based in Freeport, Maine in the US who studied at the Portland School of Art, and who recently completed a workshop at the prestigious Haystack Mountain School of Craft. In her own words: "My work comes from an emotive place instead of an observational one, therefore it leans towards a more abstract genre but is still based in landscape as inspiration. I was concerned about the space or tension between the two "figures" or islands. I restricted myself to a 5-color palette to discover what range of emotion I could paint. The colors are: Payne's Grey, Raw Sienna, Naples Yellow, Titanium White and Raw Umber. I was concerned with layering and scraping the paint to show the underpainting in order to capture a sense of light. New color relationships were created from this process resulting in a push/pull of figure ground relationships. The work is made with color shapers instead of brushes."
